Work Experience

Since graduating, I've really put my Communication Studies (CS) degree to work. I am a research assistant at the CS lab here at UCLA, where we manage "Newsscape" -- a massive digital library of international, national and local television news programs, and an excellent resource for scholars, professors and researchers. I also work as a business development representative at Hype Well, Inc. -- the digital marketing agency behind small to large businesses like Kabuki, Noodle World, Hook Burger, and 85 Degrees Bakery. Previously, I was a PR Coordinator at Over The Edge Books -- a "new school" publishing company for independent artists, musicians, and authors.

Why did you choose Comm Studies as your major?

I started taking Communication Studies classes because many of older family members had successful careers in advertising, television, and corporate communications. I was curious, and also passionate about the important role media plays in society. I found that "communications" is much more than marketing, advertising, or mass media; it ranges from cognition to negotiation, interpersonal dialogue to large-scale public diplomacy. I love that the major is multi-functional and multi-perspective, and teaches me a range of skills I can apply to any industry.

Favorite UCLA memory and/or professor

I'd definitely like to shout out Prof. Francis Steen, a great mentor and friend who once told me, "Don't just find a job, find a problem in the world, then the solution for it!" His advice has helped me look at my career critically, creatively and more meaningfully! I've also always enjoyed talking tech with Prof. Groeling, chatting with Prof. Dee and Marty, and spending time with Jane Bitar!

What was the most valuable or applicable lesson you learned from a Comm Studies class?

Comm Studies has made me a more conscious consumer of all things media. It helped me negotiate a deal when I bought my first car, and continues to help me whenever I sign a potential partner at Hype Well. It has given me the confidence to stand up in front of a crowd (though this will always be pretty nerve-racking for me).

What advice would you give to a current Comm Studies student?

To current Comm Studies students -- Don't take this awesome department for granted! I encourage students to knock on every door of Rolfe Hall, meet and learn from the best faculty and staff in all of campus!
