Commencement 2024


Congratulations to the Department of Communication Class of 2024!

Dear Graduating Seniors!

Congratulations!  The Faculty and Staff of the Department of Communication are looking forward to sharing this wonderful occasion with you.

The Communication Department Ceremony will be held in Royce Hall on Sunday, June 16, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  This is the only graduation ceremony at which you will be individually recognized.

To Prepare for Graduation:

– Declare your Degree Expected Term via  MyUCLA (http://my.ucla.edu).
– Please make sure to cross check your graduation requirements with a counselor at the College (A316 Murphy) and email Pia Svenson at:  psvenson@comm.ucla.edu with your student ID to make sure you have completed all your requirements for the Communication major.

Prior to Graduation Day:

– Refer to the College Commencement Website for general information, timeline and key dates.
– Check announcements posted to MyUCLA.
– Attend one of the graduation workshops offered through the College.  To view the workshop schedule, visit MyUCLA and click on the “services” button at the top of the page.
– Complete the “College Senior Survey” available on your MyUCLA.
– Order your cap, gown, and tassel from Graduation Etc.
– Online ticket ordering begins on later next month – dates will be announced shortly.
– Tickets will be electronic

TICKET INFORMATION:

Each student is given four complimentary tickets for the Comm Ceremony.  You will also have the option to be wait-listed for four additional tickets at $20.00/each.  The actual number of additional tickets, if any, will not be known until after the initial requests have been processed.

Ticket orders for the Communication department ceremony will begin on Friday, May 10, 2024 at noon and will end on Friday, May 24, 2024 at midnight. You must reserve your ticket and reserve your 4 free guest tickets during the ticket ordering period. Additional guest tickets are $20 each, but are not guaranteed. We will wait until after May 24, 2024 to consider granting any additional guest tickets to make sure there is enough room for all graduates to attend. REFUNDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR UNUSED WAITLISTED TICKETS.

It is mandatory that each of your guests have an electronic ticket for our ceremony.  Anyone without a ticket will be refused admission by the Campus Events Office Staff.

Tickets for all ceremonies will be distributed electronically between Tuesday, May 28th and Thursday, June 13th. All tickets will be sent by the Central Ticket Office (CTO) from cto@tickets.ucla.edu. Please be sure to check that your email account is accurate in MyUCLA, and also check your email account’s SPAM folder frequently, to be sure you do not overlook these important messages.

Ticket ordering should be completed using the commencement ticket portal on MyUCLA >> Academics tab >> Commencement link. Full details about commencement ticket ordering is listed here: https://www.college.ucla.edu/commencement/ticketing/ 

Depending on how many tickets are ordered by all students, there may be extras available.  If you would like additional tickets to the Comm Ceremony, after the ticket ordering window closes  e-mail Pia Svenson at psvenson@comm.ucla.edu with your name, I.D.# and the number of EXTRA tickets you need (outside of what is ordered online).

– Students or guests with disabilities should contact the Office of Students with Disabilities;  (310) 825-1501 voice; (310) 206-6083 TDD, after May 2nd to receive information about parking and other assistance.

On Graduation Day:

– You need to arrive by 10:00 a.m.  The ceremony will start promptly at 10:30 a.m.
– Assemble in cap and gown at the west side of Royce Hall auditorium.
– Graduates will be asked to sit together in a special separate section.
– Seating is unreserved.  Doors will open at 10:00 a.m.
– GradImages will provide professional photography services at the ceremony.  They will provide you with a name card to fill out.  To avoid  mispronunciation, write a phonetic version of your name on the back of the card.

During the Graduation Ceremony:

– You will walk onto the stage and hand your card to the member of our faculty who is waiting to introduce you.
– After your name is announced, you will walk across the stage toward the Department Chair, shake her hand, then step down and return to your seat.
– Two photos will be taken:  (1) as you shake hands with the Chair and (2) right before you step down from the stage.  There may be a third photo taken at the bottom of the steps.

Important Dates:

Thursday, May 2nd at 12pm – MyUCLA notice will be sent to submit College of Letters & Science commencement ceremony time preferences. Submit at your earliest convenience.

Sunday, May 5th at 11:59pm – Deadline to submit College of Letters & Science commencement ceremony time preferences

Thursday, May 9th – Finalized College of Letters & Science commencement ceremony time assignments released

Friday, May 10th at 12pm – Department of Communication department ticket orders begin

  • Students must order their own ticket and can submit a request for up to 4 free guest tickets
  • If you are requesting more than 4 tickets, each additional ticket request will be under review (not automatically approved) in a waitlisted status until we can confirm space is available. If waitlisted tickets are approved, this decision will be released May 30th. Each waitlisted ticket is $20 each and will be automatically charged to the student’s BruinBill account.
  • According to the UCLA Central Ticket Office, REFUNDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR UNUSED TICKETS. We ask that you do not request waitlisted tickets unless you know you will need them.

Friday, May 24th at 11:59pm – Deadline to request tickets for the Communication commencement ceremony (students must order their own ticket and guest tickets by this deadline)

  • Space is not guaranteed, please submit ticket orders by the deadline to reserve your seat and your guest seats

Thursday, May 30th at 11:59pm – Waitlist ticket decisions released
