SUMMARY:Jennifer Pan - Brown Bag Talk "Digital Repression"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Repression research examines the causes and consequences of actions or policies that are meant to\, or actually do\, raise the costs of activism\, protest\, and/or social movement activity. The rise of digital and social media has brought substantial increases in attention to the repression of digital activists and movements and/or to the use of digital tools in repression\, which is spread across many disciplines and areas of study. This paper organizes this growing welter of research under the concept of digital repression by expanding a typology that distinguishes actions based on actor type\, whether actions are overt or covert\, and whether behaviors are shaped by coercion or channeling. This delineation between broadly different forms of digital repression allows us to develop expectations about digital repression\, better understand what is “new” about digital repression in terms of explanatory factors\, and better understand the consequences of digital repression.

SUMMARY:Winter 2023 Brown Bag series - Jennifer Whitson\, UCLA Anderson School of Management
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Whitson\nUCLA Anderson School of Management\n\nTitle: Conspiracy Theories and the Search for Structure\nAbstract: Conspiracy theories cast disparate or unrelated entities as engaging in concerted\, malevolent action. In this talk\, I explore antecedents and consequences of beliefs in conspiracy theories. I first present evidence that individual characteristics (i.e.\, regulatory focus\, political identity) and aspects about the environment (i.e.\, COVID-19 and social media) shape peoples’ receptiveness to conspiratorial beliefs. I then examine a timely consequence of conspiracy theories. Specifically\, how COVID-19-related conspiratorial beliefs have had a significant negative impact on the perception of COVID-19 vaccine importance in the U.S.. Finally\, I suggest a possible intervention that may help ameliorate the adverse effect of conspiratorial beliefs. In particular\, interdependent self-construal may mitigate the relationship between the COVID-19-related conspiratorial beliefs and reduced vaccination rates by increasing the perceived health risks of going unvaccinated. Our intervention differs from previous efforts in that it does not rely on rational persuasion to dissuade people of conspiratorial notions. Instead\, we focus on reducing the impact of conspiratorial beliefs by altering the way people think about their existing identities and groups.

DESCRIPTION:“Beyond the Valley: The Challenges and Promises of a People-Centered Internet”by Ramesh SrinivasanAbstract: The past 20 years have profound the impact is of digital technologies to connect our world. What we may not have expected is how these technologies did not shape ‘connectivity’ but became so central in everyday life. From our economic systems to how we receive news\, to how we automate the future\, technological intermediaries have interwoven themselves into everyday life\, not just in the West but across the world. But in whose image are these forms of connectivity created\, and how can we ensure that there is appropriate balance between the values we aspire toward as human-beings with the ways we build and design such systems? This talk will be a sneak preview of some material from Srinivasan’s third book\, which is built upon research conducted with leading figures in politics\, economics\, and culture/across the world. Srinivasan will share insights around how our future is being shaped by the decisions we make with technology right here and now.

BurgoonProfessor of Communication\, Family Studies and Human Development Director of Research for the Center for the Management of Information University of Arizona”Deception and its Detection: The Good\, the Bad\, the Ugly”Tuesday\, April 23\, 2019 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m. UCLA Rolfe HallRoom 2303AAbout the lecture: For centuries\, deception has attracted the interest of poets\, scholars and scientists alike to unravel all its intricacies and determine how best to detect it. In this talk I will define what is meant by deception\, what motives drive it\, what are reliable (and unreliable) verbal and nonverbal indicators\, and how new technologies can be harnessed to detect it. I will introduce AVATAR\, our Automated Virtual Agent for Truth Assessment in Real-time and discuss how its multiple sensors are superior to human judgment in detecting deception.About the speaker: Judee K. Burgoon is Professor of Communication\, Family Studies and Human Development at the University of Arizona\, USA\, where she is Director of Research for the Center for the Management of Information. Previously she has served on the faculties of Michigan State University\, University of Oklahoma\, and University of Florida and was appointed as a Distinguished Scholar at Harvard University. Professor Burgoon has authored or edited 14 books and monographs and over 300 articles\, chapters and reviews related to deception\, nonverbal and relational communication\, interpersonal relationships\, communication technologies\, and research methods. Her research\, which currently centers on deception\, trust\, interpersonal interaction\, and automated detection systems\, has garnered over $16 million in extramural funding from the National Science Foundation\, Department of Defense\, Department of Homeland Security\, Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity\, National Center for Credibility Assessment\, and Gannett Foundation\, among others. Her latest research award from the Department of Defense will develop Socio- Cultural Attitudinal Networks. Among her awards and honors\, she has been elected as a Distinguished Scholar by the National Communication Association\, Fellow of the International Communication Association\, and member of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology. Her research has earned her the NCA Mark L. Knapp Award in Interpersonal Communication\, the Steven B. Chaffee Career Achievement Award\, and Charles Woolbert Award for Research with Lasting Impact. She has been identified as the most prolific female scholar in the field of communication in the twentieth century.
