Professor Rick Dale creates news site giving visitors a bird’s-eye view on news media activity surrounding the COVID-19 situation.

A research group based in the Department of Communication at UCLA has created a news site giving visitors a bird’s-eye view on news media activity surrounding the COVID-19 situation. This website diverts significant data from an ongoing research project, called “CogMedia.” The original aim of this big-data research project is to use ideas from cognitive science to predict news and social media activity. CogMedia contains hundreds of thousands of stories and updates every 10 minutes. COMM faculty member Rick Dale adapted the project’s code to create a news website for the UCLA community and wider public to gain quick insights into major news outlets and how they are covering the recent crisis. The website is here:https://co-mind.org/cogmedia/browse/covid.phpThe website should not be considered an official source of medical or emergency information. It shares links to official resources such as UCLA’s main COVID-19 page. However the website can serve as an integrated information source about how major stories are evolving. It will be improved and adapted over the next few weeks. Interested members of the public may contact Prof. Rick Dale with concerns, suggestions or questions (rdale@ucla.edu)
