Communication Skills Institute for International Students
The Communication Skills Institute for International Students (CSIIS) at UCLA will again be offering two very special classes this summer.
We will be giving International Students a holistic program in acquiring English language skills and orientation to American culture. Comprised of two courses, Comm1A (Public Speaking for Nonnative Speakers) and Comm1B (Learning American English and Culture from Movies) CSIIS is designed to focus the educational potential of UCLA’s Department of Communication and the cultural venues of Los Angeles into a comprehensive, effective, and enjoyable educational environment.
Due to the cultural diversity represented by our participating students, an added benefit of our program has evolved. Not only are CSIIS students exposed to the intricacies of US language and culture through guided coursework and encounters with American students; they also interact with a diverse group of students from a wealth of other countries and cultures in our Comm1A and Comm1B classrooms. UCLA strives to create a nurturing and intellectually challenging environment geared to experience the rich diversity of people from many different cultural backgrounds. This is the essence of the UCLA and CSIIS experience. In addition, our students have increasingly indicated an interest in Communication as an exciting and cutting edge educational discipline that enables them to effectively understand and interact with a broad range of Americans.
You can enroll in either COMM1A (Public Speaking for Nonnative Speakers-for more more information on COMM1A, click here) or COMM1B (Learning American English and Culture from Movies-for more information on COMM1B, click here). However, if you enroll in both COMM1A & COMM1B it fulfills the eight (8) units of school credit required for a USA Student Visa. Also, if you enroll in both COMM1A and COMM1B you will receive a Certificate of Completion from UCLA’s Department of Communication documenting your successful completion of the Communication Skills Institute for International Students.
