Currently in graduate school at UCSB working towards earning a MA/PHD in Communication, specializing in media effects, new media and human development.
Why did you choose Comm Studies as your major?
I thought communication studies best matched how I viewed the world and was an interesting and applicable topic in a world with evolving communication technologies.
Favorite UCLA memory and/or professor
One of my favorite memories from the UCLA communication department is also one of my first. I remember I was taking social networks with Professor Peterson and I had a test to make up because I had injured my ankle. It was winter and it had just recently rained, making my mode of transportation, crutches, very difficult. I remember when I made it finally to the second floor in Rolfe, I practically couldn't stand any more and knew I was too early for Professor Peterson to already be in his office. Jane saw me slowly fall to the floor to sit and rest. She stopped me and with her usual sunshine attitude asked if I needed a chair, which I agreed to. Not only did she bring me a chair, she somehow knew I hadn't had breakfast and brought me a cupcake and a water bottle while I waited for Professor Peterson. She cheered me up and helped turn my hard morning into a wonderful one! I knew then that I would love this department.
How has Comm Studies empowered you in your professional and personal life?
Comm Studies empowered me in my professional and personal life through the relationships I built. Professors taught me how to read an empirical article, how to find my interests, and how to conduct research. While the entire department encouraged me through times of personal difficulties and pushed me back on my feet when I was struggling the most.
What was the most valuable or applicable lesson you learned from a Comm Studies class?
This is a tough question, there are so many classes and with the broad spectrum of topics under Comm, I think I've learned things that apply to multiple areas of my life. In Von Blum's courses, I was introduced to a new perspective and a way to look at the world. I was encouraged to pursue my own voice in this world. I think I really took from both his courses the importance of speaking up for what I believe and the value and influence of expression.Kerri Johnson's nonverbal behavior course, I really learned how to take a part an empirical article, while in her negotiation class I was handed tools for my job negotiations which I have shared with my friends. Peterson gave me advice and helped open my eyes to the path of becoming a Professor in Communication, which is my current goal!
What advice would you give to a current Comm Studies student?
I would tell a current comm studies student to soak up everything they can in class and to simultaneously search for all the real world applications of the information. This is one of the majors that is most remarkable because there are so many different directions to go in after using it. I say get close to the professors, intimate with the subject, and personal with the information. This way you'll be prepared to make the most of your education and get the most out of your undergraduate experience.
